When hollywood gets bigger, where does independent film fit?

Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, bringing two major Hollywood studios under the Skydance corporate umbrella. The announcement moves the conversation from whether the deal will happen to what happens next.

For independent filmmakers, my question is straightforward: Where will new voices find room? A larger company may have substantial resources, but that alone doesn’t tell us which stories it will finance, distribute, or put in front of an audience.

There’s another development worth watching. Blex Media reports that Black-owned Lion Forge Entertainment has expanded into live-action film with the sports comedy The Streak, which has wrapped production. That’s a useful reminder to look beyond the biggest corporate announcements when following who’s building opportunities in film.

Here in Utah, we can take part in that conversation ourselves. Attend an independent screening. Ask a filmmaker about the work. Bring someone who wouldn’t ordinarily go.

Gloriafilm Society brings filmmakers, film students, creatives, and film lovers together around meaningful stories. Our responsibility is to be intentional about what we show and make the conversation worth staying for.

Hollywood’s next chapter deserves our attention. So does the storyteller sitting beside us.
